Dress Code: “Smart Italian”
Gentlemen: dark suit (with tie).
Ladies: smart dress or suit. Dresses do not need to be long. You do not need to wear a hat. Please do avoid wearing a total black or a total white (or ivory) attire (wearing black clothing signifies death and mourning and white or ivory…are for the bride only!). If you can, also avoid purple (traditionally, purple is used for mourning and fastening) and bright red. Tradition would require you to cover your shoulders in a catholic church. If your dress is strapless or has thin spaghetti straps, you can wrap a scarf, bolero jacket or silk shrug over your dress during the religious ceremony. If you forget it…it’s not a big deal, nobody will notice!
Weather (hoping for a good “ottobrata romana”)
Rome is famous for its October: it often is warm and sunny, and during the day it feels like summer is not completely over yet. Temperatures are around 20-25 Celsius during daytime and 10-15 at night. When the weather is nice and the sun creates this golden glow as the day progresses into evening, we have what we call an “ottobrata romana”. Sometimes, however, it’s just a regular October: rainy, gloomy and chilly (during the day, however, temperatures never go below 15 Celsius).
Before and after the wedding
Many of you will travel a fairly long way to join us in Rome and will probably spend more than a day in town. Even though we suspect it will not be particularly difficult for you to find a monument to visit or a restaurant to eat good pasta, we’ll do our best to keep your agenda busy with some side events before and after the wedding.
Most probably, there will be:
- a very informal aperitivo on Friday evening (around 7pm) to meet those who are already in town, make sure they are fine and warm up before the wedding;
- an informal brunch on Sunday morning (from noon onwards) to cool down after the wedding and say goodbye.

About Vine, Wine and other Vital Stuff
Apparently the Romans played a big role in spreading vineyards all over Europe and making wine a lasting success. For the Romans, the vine was a symbol of strength, adaptability and transformation. Vines also symbolised loyalty and duration. This symboloic meaning survived in the Catholic culture, together with the importance attributed to wine.
Vino, Vite, Vita, Vitale…it’s all clearly relevant to us! This is why during the wedding you will see vines and grapes hidden here and there. And this is also why you are expected to drink a lot of wine!
